Accutane and Pregnancy
In the months after accutane's commercial release in 1982 it became evident that something was seriously wrong. By 1983 a number of public consumer groups began a petition asking the FDA to force La Roche to include warning information with the drug. These concerns escalated to cause another petition calling for an Accutane ban in 1988. Current statistics suggest that about 25 percent of Accutane pregnancy births result in serious birth defects and 50 percent of the Accutane pregnancy births result in mental disability. In order receive a prescription for accutane you must take a pregnancy test with negative results before a Doctor can authorize use of the drug. You will also be required to take a second pregnancy test during the first 5 days of the menstrual period before you begin to take accutane. 
In addition to these precautions you will also be requested to take monthly pregnancy tests for the duration of the accutane treatment program. Your doctor will can provide you with information on the best methods of birth control and how to use them should you decide to proceed with the treatment. Failure to adhere to these strict regulations seriously places you at risk of becoming pregnant and suffering from the trauma that thousands of other women have had to face. If you become pregnant, miss a menstrual cycle while using accutane it is recommended that you immediately stop taking Accutane and notify your doctor. |
Guidelines for Females
Due to continued concerns about birth defects caused by accutane, in August 2005 the FDA strengthened safety warnings and added a requirement that women receiving Accutane and doctors prescribing it participate in a national database. They hope that this will reduce the number of people who become pregnant while using accutane and help further regulate the use of this potentially lethal drug. Accutane and Breastfeeding
• It is not known whether Accutane passes into breast milk. Do not take Accutane without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
